How a Bong Works

A bong pulls smoke through water before it reaches your mouth. Water cools the smoke and traps some solid particles. It does not remove tar, carbon monoxide, or fine particulates. Cannabis smoke carries many of the same irritants as tobacco smoke, per the American Lung Association.

How to Pack a Bong Bowl: Grind, Fill, Light

What to Have Ready

  • Clean bong, 10 to 14 inches for a first session
  • Cold water
  • Ground flower, medium grind
  • Lighter or hemp wick
  • Drinking water, food, a seat, and 2 to 4 free hours

Set Up

  1. Fill water 1 to 2 inches above the downstem holes. Too little water gives hot smoke. Too much splashes your mouth.
  2. Grind 0.1 to 0.25 g of flower. A medium grind burns even. Fine powder pulls through the holes.
  3. Pack the bowl loose. Air must move through the flower. A tight pack blocks the draw.
  4. Stand or sit upright. Keep the bong vertical so water stays in the chamber.

Take the Hit

  1. Exhale first. Empty lungs take in more smoke.
  2. Seal your lips on the mouthpiece. No gaps.
  3. Light the edge of the bowl and inhale at the same time. Use a slow, steady draw.
  4. Keep the flame on the flower for 1 to 2 seconds. Move it across the bowl edge, not the center.
  5. Pull the bowl out, or lift the carb, to clear the chamber.
  6. Inhale the smoke into your lungs. Exhale after 2 to 3 seconds. Holding longer does not add effect.
  7. Set the bong down. Wait 15 minutes before a second hit.

Dose for a First Session

Smoked THC reaches the brain in seconds. Peak effect lands at about 10 to 15 minutes. Start with 1 hit. Two hits is a firm ceiling for session one. Flower under 15 percent THC lowers the odds of a rough experience. High THC doses can cause anxiety, paranoia, and a fast heart rate, per the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Cut the Cough

  • Take smaller hits. Chamber volume, not lung size, drives the cough.
  • Use cold water. Ice in the neck helps if the bong has an ice catch.
  • Change the water each session. Stale water adds harsh taste.
  • Skip tobacco mixed in the bowl. Nicotine hits hard through water.

Safety

  • Buy from a licensed shop. Legal sales require age 21 or older in US states with adult use. Rules vary by state, per SAMHSA.
  • Do not drive. Cannabis slows reaction time and lane control for hours after the last hit, per the CDC.
  • Do not mix with alcohol, which raises impairment and nausea risk.
  • Skip cannabis with heart conditions, lung conditions, pregnancy, or a personal history of psychosis.
  • Tell a friend what you took and when.

If It Goes Wrong

Feeling dizzy or panicked is common at high doses. Sit down. Breathe through your nose. Sip water. The feeling fades over 1 to 2 hours. Call 911 for chest pain, a racing pulse that will not slow, or vomiting that will not stop.

using a bong basics

Common First Time Mistakes

  • Packing the bowl too tight
  • Filling water above the downstem opening
  • Taking a second hit before the first one lands
  • Using a dirty bong. Resin and old water carry bacteria and taste bad.
  • Standing up fast after a hit

Cleaning

Rinse the bong with hot water after each session. Once a week, soak the bowl and downstem in isopropyl alcohol with coarse salt, then shake. Rinse all alcohol out before use. A clean piece gives smoother smoke and less odor.
