Pick: dry-herb vaporizer

A dry-herb vaporizer heats ground flower to 160 C to 230 C. No flame touches the plant. The device releases cannabinoids as vapor. It skips the tar and PAH load that comes with burning.

Three points favor it. It uses the same flower sold in stores. Dosing stays close to smoking. And the exposure markers researchers test, tar, carbon monoxide, and PAHs, run lower than with a joint.

What the research shows

The National Academies reviewed the literature in 2017. Its panel found limited evidence of no link between cannabis smoking and lung cancer. It found insufficient evidence for other cancer sites.

A pooled case-control analysis by Hashibe and colleagues combined studies from several countries. Habitual cannabis smokers showed no rise in lung cancer risk. Sample sizes for heavy, long-term smokers stayed small.

Vaporizer data covers chemistry, not cancer. Hazekamp and colleagues measured vapor at 185 C and 225 C in 2007. Tar and carbon monoxide dropped compared with smoked flower. THC delivery held.

Options

1. Oil cartridge vape

Cartridges heat a cannabis oil or distillate. No plant material burns. Two caveats apply. High voltage degrades the oil into carbonyls such as formaldehyde. Additives matter too. CDC tied a 2019 lung injury outbreak to vitamin E acetate in THC cartridges. That outbreak produced 2,807 hospitalizations and 68 deaths.

2. Smoked flower

Joints, pipes, and bongs burn at 600 C to 900 C. Smoke carries tar, carbon monoxide, PAHs, and benzene. A water pipe cools smoke. It does not remove those compounds.

3. Edibles

Edibles add no combustion byproducts and no inhaled smoke. Dose control is the tradeoff. Onset runs 30 to 120 minutes.

What stays unknown

No cohort has followed vape users for 20 years. Cancer latency runs that long. Current claims rest on exposure markers, not diagnoses. Heating any material creates some byproducts. Temperature control matters in both formats.
