Cannabis shake for edibles
Shake is the loose plant material that falls off cannabis buds during harvest, trimming, and packaging. It holds small leaves, broken flower, and some stem. Shake works for edibles. It costs less than whole flower. It also carries less THC per gram and more plant taste.
THC content
Whole flower tests between 15% and 30% THC in legal US markets. Shake tests between 8% and 15%. Stems and leaf hold little THC. Labs measure the batch, not the bag, so ask the store for the label or the test report.

Use the label number for dosing math. Guessing 20% on a shake bag will overshoot.
Decarboxylation first
Raw cannabis holds THC in acid form, THCA. Heat removes the acid group. This step is called decarboxylation.
- Heat the oven to 240°F (115°C).
- Grind the shake. Keep it coarse.
- Spread it on a parchment lined baking sheet in a thin layer.
- Bake 30 to 45 minutes. Stir at the halfway point.
Cover the tray with foil to hold in terpenes. The smell will fill the room. Vent the kitchen.
Infuse into butter or oil
Fat carries THC. Butter, coconut oil, and olive oil all work. Coconut oil pulls more cannabinoids per gram because of its fat content.
- Ratio: 7 to 14 grams of decarbed shake per 1 cup (2 sticks) of butter.
- Heat: 160°F to 180°F. Do not boil.
- Time: 2 to 3 hours. Stir every 30 minutes.
- Strain: cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer. Squeeze the solids.
Lecithin, 1 teaspoon per cup, helps the oil and water mix in batter.
Dose math
Formula: grams of shake x 1000 x THC% x 0.75 = total milligrams. Divide by servings.
Example: 14 g at 10% THC. 14 x 1000 x 0.10 x 0.75 = 1050 mg. Cut the batch into 100 pieces for 10.5 mg each.
Legal US states cap a single serving at 10 mg THC and a package at 100 mg. Colorado and Washington use those limits.
Storage
Keep shake in a glass jar, away from light, at 60°F to 70°F. Dry shake loses potency over months. Infused butter keeps 2 weeks in the fridge and 6 months in the freezer.
Limits
Shake can hold seeds, stem, and leaf. These add weight and little THC. Pick out stems before grinding. Water curing removes chlorophyll and cuts the green taste. It also strips terpenes.
Home test kits measure THC with low accuracy. A lab test costs money and takes time. Label math remains the standard.
