Smalls are the smaller flower buds from a cannabis harvest. Dispensaries list them as smalls, popcorn, minis, or B-buds. They come from the same plants as full-size buds and sell for less per gram. To find them near you, open a dispensary menu, filter to flower, and search the terms smalls, popcorn, or minis. Call the store if the listing does not state bud size.
What counts as a small
Growers sort flower by size after drying and trimming. Buds that fall below the top grade go into the smalls pile. There is no national size standard. A common cutoff is about the size of a dime to a nickel, but each cultivator sets its own screen.
Why smalls cost less
- Bag appeal. Small buds photograph worse than large colas.
- Trim labor. Small buds take longer to hand-trim per gram.
- Stem weight. Small buds carry more stem and leaf per gram of flower.
Potency is a separate question. Lab results for smalls from one harvest often land within a few points of the large buds from the same plants. Ask for the COA, or certificate of analysis, if the THC number matters to you. Results differ by cultivar and grower.
How to search a dispensary menu
- Open the store menu online.
- Filter to flower.
- Search "smalls," "popcorn," "minis," or "budget."
- Sort by price per gram, not by package price.
Package price hides the math. A $40 14-gram bag of smalls runs $2.86 per gram. A $50 7-gram bag of full-size flower runs $7.14 per gram.
Cannabis Popcorn Buds: A Comprehensive Guide
What to check before you buy
- Package date and harvest date. Flower loses moisture over time. A 6-month-old bag is dry.
- Net weight. Confirm 3.5 g, 7 g, 14 g, or 28 g.
- COA THC percentage and terpene list.
- Trim quality. Look for sugar leaf and visible stem.
- Moisture. Buds should bend, not crumble.
Rules at the counter
Retail cannabis sales require a state license. Stores check photo ID. The minimum age is 21 in every US state with adult-use sales. Purchase limits are set per state and per transaction. Most adult-use states cap flower at 1 ounce to 2 ounces per sale. Medical patients often have higher caps. Some states do not allow adult-use sales at all, so inventory and rules change at state lines.
Storage
Keep smalls in an airtight glass jar away from light and heat. Add a humidity pack if the flower is dry. Smalls dry faster than large buds because they have more surface area per gram.
