Charging without killing it
Use the cable that came with the battery, or a matching one. Plug into a standard 5V/1A wall brick rather than a fast-charge block built for a phone. The small cells in these batteries aren't designed for high current. Don't leave it plugged in overnight, and don't charge it in a hot car. Heat is what shortens lithium-ion life.
Cleaning and small habits
Oil collects on the threads and the contact pin. A dry cotton swab with a little isopropyl alcohol clears it. Let everything dry before you screw a cart back on. Don't overtighten. Snug is enough, and cranking it down can crack the cart or strip the connector. Store the battery upright at room temperature, and pull the cart off if you won't use it for a while.
When it doesn't work
- No vapor but the light comes on: clean the contact pin and threads, then loosen the cart a quarter turn.
- Blinking light: usually a low battery. Charge it. If it still blinks on a full charge, the cart may be shorted or the coil is dead.
- Burnt taste: turn the voltage down. If it persists, the coil is already scorched and the cart is done.
- Weak pulls: a clogged airway. Run preheat for a few seconds, then pull gently. Hard pulls push oil into the mouthpiece.
Safety
These are lithium-ion cells and they can fail. Never carry a bare battery loose in a pocket with keys or coins, don't use one that's swollen or dented, and stop charging if the battery gets hot. Unregulated mods have no protection circuitry and aren't a good fit for a cartridge. A regulated battery with short-circuit cutoff costs a little more and is worth it.
