Quick pick

THC has human trial data in PTSD. CBDA has none. Both THC trials in PTSD enrolled 10 patients. No trial ran past 12 weeks. Neither compound is FDA-approved for PTSD. Use THC under clinical supervision, not as self-treatment. Treat CBDA as a research compound you can track, not as a therapy.

THC: what the PTSD studies measured

  • Jetly et al., 2015: nabilone, a synthetic THC analog, 10 patients, crossover design, 7 weeks per arm. Nightmare frequency and CAPS scores fell against placebo.
  • Roitman et al., 2014: delta-9-THC 5 mg twice daily added to an SSRI, 10 patients, double-blind. Nightmare frequency fell. Sleep quality rose.
  • Sample sizes were 10 in both. Neither trial was replicated at scale.
  • The VA/DoD 2023 guideline recommends against cannabinoids for PTSD. The panel cited weak evidence and harm risk.

CBDA: what the studies show

No human trial of CBDA in PTSD exists. Pubmed returns zero clinical trials for the compound in any psychiatric indication. Preclinical work: CBDA is a 5-HT1A receptor agonist in cell assays. Rodent studies show reduced nausea and reduced anxiety behavior. CBDA also inhibits COX-2 in vitro.

cannabis for ptsd dosage recommendations

Open questions: oral bioavailability in humans is unmeasured. CBDA decarboxylates to CBD with heat, light and time. A tincture stored warm loses CBDA content. Potency on raw cannabis labels varies by lot and by harvest date.

Side by side

  • Human PTSD trials: THC, 2 small RCTs. CBDA, 0.
  • Largest sample: 10 patients per trial.
  • FDA approval for PTSD: neither compound.
  • Known THC effects at trial doses: dry mouth, tachycardia, anxiety, short-term memory loss, dependency risk.
  • CBDA human side effect data: not collected.
  • Label data on legal products: THC mg per unit is required. CBDA mg per unit appears on some labels, not all.

Options at Eden Cannabis

Start with the form that carries a certificate of analysis. Check THC mg per unit and CBDA mg per unit before you pay.

cannabis for ptsd anxiety and hyperarousal

  1. Low-dose THC, 2.5 mg per unit or less. Easier to stop if anxiety rises.
  2. Balanced THC/CBD products. Evidence on CBD blunting THC effects is mixed.
  3. Raw or low-heat CBDA products: fresh flower, juice, unheated tincture. Keep them cold and dark. Expect no PTSD symptom relief from current data.

What to ask before you buy

  • What is the THC mg per dose?
  • What is the CBDA mg per dose, and when was the batch tested?
  • Was the product stored cold?
  • Can I see the certificate of analysis for this lot?

PTSD has three first-line psychotherapies (prolonged exposure, cognitive processing therapy, EMDR) and two FDA-approved drugs (sertraline, paroxetine). Cannabinoids are not on that list. Talk to your prescriber before you add THC or CBDA to a regimen.
