What a chillum is

A chillum is a straight, cone-shaped pipe with no carb hole. The wide end holds ground dry herb and the narrow end is the mouthpiece. Because the bowl and the airway are one continuous channel, a chillum works best as a single-serving pipe: you load one bowl, light the top, and draw the whole load in one steady pull. That gives a fast, direct hit with no ash sitting in the pipe afterward. Chillums come in glass, clay, ceramic, wood, and metal. Glass and clay are the easiest to load, hit, and clean.

People choose a chillum for dry herb because it is small, cheap, and needs very little herb per session. It also cools nothing, so the hit is warm and immediate. If you want a gentler draw, choose a longer chillum or one with a wider channel.

Small Chillum for Personal Use: A Buying Guide

What you need

  • Ground dry herb, medium consistency
  • A chillum with a clean, unobstructed channel
  • A small metal or glass screen that fits the bowl
  • A poker, paper clip, or toothpick
  • A lighter or hemp wick
  • Isopropyl alcohol at 91 percent, coarse salt, pipe cleaners, and warm water for cleaning

How to pack and use a chillum

  1. Grind the dry herb to a medium consistency so it burns evenly and does not clog the channel.
  2. Drop a screen into the bowl end and press it flat against the bottom.
  3. Fill the bowl with ground herb until the load sits just below the rim.
  4. Press the herb down with a poker to make a flat, even surface.
  5. Tap the side of the chillum once to settle any loose pieces.
  6. Hold the chillum at a slight upward angle with the bowl away from your face.
  7. Seal the bowl end with your palm or a small plug, leaving a narrow gap for air.
  8. Draw a short test breath to confirm the channel is clear.
  9. Touch the corner of a flame to the top of the bowl and let the herb catch.
  10. Inhale in one slow, steady pull while you keep the flame off the herb.
  11. Knock the spent herb into an ashtray while the pipe is still warm.

Draw technique that keeps the bowl burning

Most chillum problems come from the draw, not the pipe. Pull too hard and you suck flame and ash into your mouth. Pull too soft and the herb smolders and goes out. Aim for a slow, even breath that takes about three to five seconds. Open the palm seal a little if the draw feels tight, and close it if the hit feels too airy. Relight only the top layer, and stop when the herb turns to gray ash. A chillum holds a small load, so a second bowl is usually better than fighting a dying one.

Cleaning a chillum

  1. Knock out all loose herb and ash while the pipe is cool enough to handle.
  2. Pour isopropyl alcohol and a spoonful of coarse salt into a sealed bag or jar.
  3. Soak the chillum in the mixture for 30 minutes.
  4. Scrub the inside channel with a pipe cleaner or long brush until it passes through clean.
  5. Rinse with warm water and let the pipe air dry completely before the next load.

Clean a chillum every few sessions. Resin builds up in the narrow channel first, and a partially blocked channel makes every hit harsh and uneven.

Common mistakes

  • Packing the bowl too tight, which blocks airflow and wastes herb
  • Skipping the screen, which pulls ash into your mouth
  • Grinding too fine, which clogs the channel
  • Using a chillum with others without cleaning between users
  • Drawing hard enough to pull flame through the pipe

Legal note

Chillums are sold as tobacco accessories in many places, but using one with cannabis is legal only where cannabis is legal. In the United States, rules vary by state, and the legal purchase age for cannabis products is 21 in adult-use states. Do not share a chillum if you are sick, and do not drive after use.
