Coco Coir vs Peat Moss for Cannabis
Pick coco coir first. It drains faster, buffers pH swings in a drain-to-waste setup, and rehydrates from a compressed brick. Peat moss stays a valid second option for growers who want a long-life mix and slower breakdown in the pot.
Why coco coir takes the first pick
Coco coir comes from coconut husk fiber. Out of the bag it sits at pH 5.5 to 6.5. Feed cannabis at pH 5.8 to 6.2 in coco and the root zone stays in range.
Coco holds 8 to 9 times its dry weight in water and still keeps air in the pore space. That ratio fits fertigation: 1 to 3 feeds per day in flower, 10 to 20 percent runoff.
Watch two numbers. Cation exchange capacity runs 39 to 60 cmol/kg, so coco holds calcium and magnesium and needs a calmag input at 2 to 5 mL per liter. Sodium and potassium from the sea and the husk can run high, so rinse or buy pre-buffered coco.

Where peat moss wins
Peat moss comes from partially decayed bog plant matter. Raw peat sits at pH 3.5 to 4.5. Blenders add dolomitic lime to land at pH 5.5 to 6.0. Buy a limed mix, not raw bale peat.
Peat holds 10 to 20 times its weight in water and breaks down over a full cycle, so one mix lasts one grow. Peat, perlite, and vermiculite blends arrive consistent from bag to bag. Peat costs less per liter in bulk at 3.8 cu ft bales (about 107 L).
Peat dust is a hazard. Wet the bale and wear a mask.
Cost and handling
- Coco brick: 5 kg expands to about 60 to 70 L. Rehydration takes 30 to 60 minutes in water.
- Coco loose bag: higher price per liter, no rehydration step.
- Peat bale: 3.8 cu ft compressed, needs lime and perlite added by hand.
- Peat premix: highest price per liter, lowest labor.
Sustainability
Peat forms over centuries and harvest releases stored carbon. Coco is a husk byproduct, but washing uses fresh water and ocean shipping adds emissions. Neither medium is free of cost.
Pick by your setup
- Drain-to-waste with daily feeds: coco coir, 70 percent coco and 30 percent perlite.
- Hand watering twice a week: peat-based mix with lime, 60 to 70 percent peat.
- Small space, one plant: one 5 kg coco brick covers a 7 to 11 L pot.
- Reused pots across cycles: peat mix holds structure longer.
Options in each medium
- Buffered coco coir brick, rinsed, low sodium.
- Coco and perlite 70/30 loose bag, ready to feed.
- Peat, perlite, vermiculite soilless mix with added lime.
- Peat bale plus dolomitic lime and perlite for a custom blend.
