Start With the Space and Your Legal Limit

Measure the closet or corner before you buy anything. A 2x2 foot tent holds one to two plants. A 2x4 foot tent holds two to four. Gear follows the footprint, not the reverse.

Check your state plant limit first. Most legal home grow states cap households at 6 to 12 plants. Some cap at 4. A handful allow no home grow at all. Buying for 12 plants in a 4 plant state wastes money.

What a Small Setup Costs Up Front

Prices below are US retail for one 2x2 or 2x4 grow, first cycle.

How Much Electricity Does a Small Grow Use?

  • LED light, 100W to 240W: $100 to $300
  • Inline fan and carbon filter: $80 to $200
  • Clip fan: $20 to $40
  • Timer and hygrometer: $25 to $60
  • Fabric pots and saucers: $15 to $40

Electricity Is the Cost That Never Stops

A 150W LED at 12 hours a day draws 1.8 kWh daily. Over a 120 day cycle that is 216 kWh. The average US home paid about 16 to 17 cents per kWh in 2024, so light cost lands near $35 to $37 per cycle.

Add a 20W fan running 24 hours: 58 kWh, about $10. Heat, AC, and dehumidifiers can double or triple the Bill in a basement or garage. In a hot state, cooling can cost more than lighting.

Cost Per Gram

A 2x2 tent under 100W to 150W of LED yields 2 to 4 ounces dry. At 3 ounces and $500 in first-run costs, that is $5.90 per gram. Run two, with gear already owned, drops to $1.50 to $2.50 per gram. Retail flower averaged $9 to $11 per gram in US legal markets in 2024.

Parameters to Buy Against

  • Light: 30W to 40W of true LED draw per square foot. Ignore "1000W equivalent" labels.
  • Air: a carbon filter sized to tent volume. Replace the filter every 12 to 18 months, $40 to $70.
  • Height: 60 inch tents fit most LED rigs. 48 inch tents limit sativa stretch.
  • Noise: inline fans run 25 to 40 dB. Bedroom grows need a fan under 30 dB.

Pitfalls

  1. Buying a light marketed as 1000W that draws 45W from the wall. Yield tracks wall watts.
  2. Skipping the carbon filter. Odor complaints drive most landlord and neighbor problems.
  3. Buying a 4x4 tent, then a light that covers 2x2. A 4x4 needs 400W to 500W of LED.
  4. Ignoring pH. Locked-out nutrients cost a full cycle.
  5. Leaving power out of the budget in hot climates. A window AC adds $50 to $150 per cycle.
  6. Buying 12 seeds for a 2 plant tent.
