What is a dab rig?
A dab rig is a water pipe. It vaporizes cannabis concentrates. The user heats a banger with a torch. The user applies concentrate to the hot banger. The user inhales vapor through water. This process is called dabbing.
Parts of a dab rig
- Banger: A cup that holds concentrate. Materials include quartz, titanium, and ceramic. Quartz is common.
- Carb cap: A lid that restricts airflow. It lowers pressure and vaporizes concentrate at lower temperatures.
- Downstem: A tube that connects the banger to the water chamber.
- Percolator: A device that diffuses vapor through water. It cools the vapor.
- Mouthpiece: The opening where the user inhales.
- Water chamber: Holds water to filter and cool vapor.
Types of dab rigs
- Glass rig: Standard rig with a banger and water chamber.
- Recycler: A rig that recycles water and vapor for smoother hits.
- Nectar collector: A straw-like device. The user heats the tip and touches concentrate.
- E-rig: An electronic rig with a battery and heating element. It does not need a torch.
Temperature ranges
Dabbing temperatures range from 315°F to 900°F. Low-temperature dabs are 315°F to 450°F. They have more flavor. Medium-temperature dabs are 450°F to 600°F. High-temperature dabs are 600°F to 900°F. They produce thicker vapor. Most users prefer 400°F to 600°F. Use a thermometer or a timer to estimate temperature.
How to use a dab rig
- Fill the rig with water. The water level should cover the percolator.
- Heat the banger with a butane torch. Heat until the banger glows red. This takes 15 to 30 seconds.
- Wait for the banger to cool. Wait 30 to 45 seconds for a medium-temperature dab. Wait 45 to 60 seconds for a low-temperature dab.
- Apply concentrate to the banger with a dab tool. Use a rice-grain size amount.
- Place the carb cap on the banger.
- Inhale through the mouthpiece. Inhale at a steady pace. Hold vapor for 2 to 3 seconds.
- Exhale. Repeat if needed.
Maintenance
Clean the rig with isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt. Shake the mixture in the rig. Rinse with warm water. Change water daily. Clean the banger after each session. Use a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol.
Safety and legal status
Use a dab rig in a ventilated area. Keep the torch away from flammable items. Do not touch the hot banger. Cannabis laws vary by state. In the US, dabbing is legal in states with adult-use or medical cannabis programs. Check local rules.
