Short answer

In most cases, no. Secondhand cannabis smoke can put THC metabolites into your body, but the amount that reaches urine sits below the standard 50 ng/mL screening cutoff. Exceptions involve small, closed spaces, several smokers, and long exposure times.

The cutoffs

A drug test uses a cutoff, not a zero line.

  • Urine immunoassay screen: 50 ng/mL THC-COOH, the inactive metabolite
  • Urine confirmation by GC-MS/MS: 15 ng/mL
  • Oral fluid: 4 ng/mL THC under the federal proposed guideline
  • Hair: lab-specific, often 0.1 pg/mg THC and 1 pg/mg THC-COOH

Results under the cutoff count as negative.

What the studies measured

Cone and colleagues (1987) placed nonsmokers in a small room with burning cannabis for one hour. Some urine samples showed THC-COOH at low positive levels under the 20 ng/mL cutoff used at the time. Most samples stayed under it.

Niedbala and colleagues (2005) seated volunteers in a car with six cannabis cigarettes burned over one hour, windows up. Oral fluid positives were common. Urine positives appeared in some subjects. Both studies used extreme conditions, not a ventilated room.

What raises the risk

  • A small room or a car with closed windows
  • Several smokers, several joints, one hour or more
  • Daily exposure at home or at work
  • A hair test after months of household smoke
  • An oral fluid swab taken within hours of exposure

Test type changes the answer

Urine. The most common test. Passive exposure moves the number by a few ng/mL in normal settings. A confirmed positive at 50 ng/mL from secondhand smoke is rare outside a closed, smoke-filled space.

Blood. THC clears in hours. Secondhand exposure gives low peaks that fall under lab limits.

Oral fluid. Smoke in the mouth deposits THC on the swab. A positive can follow direct exposure in a closed space, even with no impairment.

Hair. External contamination is the main risk. Labs use wash steps and measure the THC-COOH to THC ratio to separate smoke deposit from ingestion. A heavy smoke environment can defeat a weak wash.

Handling and contact

Touching plant material does not create THC-COOH. Urine tests look for that metabolite, so contact alone will not trigger a positive on a confirmed urine test.

If you expect a test

  • State the exposure on the chain-of-custody form.
  • Ask for a confirmation test on any screening positive.
  • For hair, ask about the wash protocol and the THC-COOH ratio.
  • Skip dilution and detox products. They can produce a dilute sample, which counts as a refusal or forces a retest.

What is unknown

No study sets a clean exposure threshold. Room volume, airflow, grams burned, time, body weight, and metabolism all shift the result. A short exposure in a ventilated room is not zero risk, but the measured values in the literature stay below cutoffs.
