High CBD cannabis costs more per milligram of CBD than high THC flower in most US states. Supply drives this. Fewer licensed cultivators run CBD dominant cultivars at volume, and clean extraction of a broad spectrum oil adds steps that land in the retail price.

Price drivers

Four inputs set the shelf price: seed or clone cost, grow time, extraction method, and lab testing. CBD dominant plants yield less resin than THC dominant plants in many rooms. Ethanol extraction costs less than CO2 extraction. Distillation and winterization add labor. Full panel testing adds a fee per batch.

How to Choose High CBD Medical Cannabis Products

Listed ranges in US medical markets: CBD flower $8 to $18 per gram. Tincture, 30 mL bottle at 600 mg CBD, $40 to $90. Vape cartridge, 300 mg CBD, $30 to $60. Capsules, 30 count at 25 mg each, $45 to $80. State tax, batch size, and cultivar rarity move these numbers.

Parameters to compare

  1. Cost per milligram of CBD. Divide total price by total milligrams in the package. Use total milligrams, not milligrams per dose.
  2. Ratio. CBD to THC stated as a number, such as 20:1 or 1:1.
  3. Total THC. Percent by dry weight for flower, milligrams per unit for oil.
  4. Test date and panel. Cannabinoid, terpene, pesticide, heavy metal, and microbial results.
  5. Source. Cannabis derived CBD from a licensed cultivator carries different legal and testing rules than hemp derived CBD.

Pitfalls

  • Label says CBD with no milligram count. You cannot compare it to anything.
  • Package lists milligrams per serving but not per bottle. Cost per milligram is unreadable.
  • No certificate of analysis with a lab name and batch number.
  • Hemp product labeled above 0.3 percent THC by dry weight. Federal hemp rules cap it there. Medical cannabis from a state program has no such cap.
  • Assumed tax break. Some states exempt medical cannabis from sales tax. Others do not. Check the receipt line.

Availability

Availability tracks state licensure and wholesale supply. A state with few CBD dominant cultivars on the wholesale market shows gaps on retail menus. Dispensary online menus update with each batch intake. Call before a drive. Ask for harvest date, batch number, and total milligrams per package. Ask when the next shipment of that cultivar arrives. If a shop cannot state milligrams per package and THC percentage, buy elsewhere.
