Short answer
In veg, defoliate light: remove 10 to 20 percent of the mature fan leaves in one session. Do this only on healthy plants with at least 4 to 6 nodes and at least 5 days before you flip to flower. Wait 3 to 5 days between sessions. Cap total removal at about 30 percent in any 7-day window. Less is better in veg than in flower.
should i defoliate my cannabis plants
Why veg is different
During veg the plant builds leaf area to capture light. Fan leaves are the sugar factories. Heavy stripping forces the plant to regrow leaves instead of building roots, stems, and nodes. That regrowth costs time and can stretch internodes. Light defoliation opens lower sites to light and improves airflow without starving the plant.
Prerequisites
- Healthy, vigorous plant with 4 to 6 nodes.
- Stable environment: 70 to 82 F and 40 to 60 percent relative humidity.
- Watering and feed schedule on track, with no active deficiencies.
- Clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears wiped with isopropyl alcohol.
- At least 5 days before the planned flip to 12/12.
How much by plant size
- Seedling to 3 nodes: 0 leaves. Do not defoliate.
- 4 to 6 nodes (2 to 3 weeks): 0 to 5 percent, only leaves touching soil or blocking the main top.
- 7 to 10 nodes: 10 to 15 percent, lower and inner fan leaves.
- Pre-flip (last week of veg): 15 to 20 percent, clear blocked bud sites and the lower third.
- Never more than 30 percent in one week.
Step-by-step
- Water the plant the day before the session.
- Wipe your shears with isopropyl alcohol.
- Remove the lowest fan leaves that touch the medium or sit in deep shadow.
- Remove inward-facing fan leaves that block light to lower nodes.
- Count as you go and stop at 10 to 20 percent of the total fan leaves.
- Leave the top 3 to 4 node sets of fan leaves untouched.
- Return the plant to its normal light and feed schedule.
- Wait 3 to 5 days and check for new growth and leaf color.
- Repeat one light pass only if the plant showed no stress.
What to remove
- Fan leaves touching the soil or pot rim.
- Leaves pointing inward toward the main stem.
- Older, yellowing, or damaged leaves.
- Leaves covering a top site you want to keep.
What to leave
- Top 3 to 4 fan leaf pairs.
- Any leaf that is fully lit and healthy.
- Leaves on stressed or slow-growing plants.
- Leaves on plants in the first 3 nodes.
Signs you went too far
Drooping within 24 hours, stalled growth for 3 or more days, pale new growth, or stretched internodes mean you removed too much. Stop all defoliation for 7 to 10 days. Raise the light slightly and keep VPD stable. The plant will rebuild on its own.
cannabis defoliation mistakes to avoid
Common mistakes
- Defoliating before the plant has 6 nodes.
- Removing more than 30 percent in one week.
- Defoliating within 3 days of flipping to flower.
- Defoliating a plant already stressed by heat, pests, or nutrient issues.
