The short answer
A spoon pipe works best with a medium grind and a light pack. Fill the bowl to just under the rim, tamp it with barely any pressure, and leave a little space for air to move through the herb. If you have to suck hard to get smoke, you packed it too tight. If the herb pulls into the hole, you packed it too loose or ground it too fine.

What you need
- A clean spoon pipe with a clear hole at the bottom of the bowl
- Cannabis ground to a medium consistency, close to coarse salt
- A poker, bent paperclip, or toothpick for clearing the hole
- A tray or small dish to catch crumbs
How to pack a spoon pipe, step by step
- Check the pipe first. Hold it to a light and look through the carb and the bowl hole. If either is blocked, clear it before you load anything.
- Grind a small amount. You need less than you think. A typical spoon bowl holds about 0.1 to 0.3 grams, depending on size.
- Scoop or pinch the flower into the bowl and let it fall in loose. Do not press it down yet.
- Level the top. Wipe off the excess with your finger or the side of the grinder so the herb sits level with or slightly below the rim.
- Tamp once, gently. Press with your fingertip or the flat end of a poker. You want the herb to hold together as one soft plug, not a hard puck. If it springs back, you pressed too hard.
- Test the draw before you light. Put your mouth on the pipe and pull. You should feel mild resistance, like sipping a thick milkshake. If the draw is stiff, break the pack up with your poker and start again.
- Corner the bowl when you light. Touch the flame to one edge of the herb instead of the whole bowl. Smaller hits keep the rest of the bowl fresh for the next round.
How tight is too tight?
Airflow is the whole game. A tight pack blocks the gaps between pieces of flower, so the flame pulls uneven and the bottom of the bowl scorches while the top stays green. A loose pack lets herb pull through the hole and into your mouth. The middle ground is a pack that feels springy under your finger and pulls with mild resistance.
Common mistakes
- Grinding to dust. Fine powder clogs the hole and burns hot.
- Filling to the very top. Leave a millimeter or two of headroom so the flame has somewhere to go.
- Packing with a tool. Hard tamping compresses the herb into a brick. Use a finger.
- Loading a full bowl for one person. Pack what you will finish in a session or two. A half bowl tastes better on the second light.
- Ignoring a dirty pipe. Resin narrows the airway. A pipe that pulls hard when empty needs cleaning, not a looser pack.
Keeping it clean
Empty the spent herb while the pipe is still warm, since ash taps out easier than cold resin. A quick scrape with a poker after each session keeps the hole open. For a deeper clean, soak glass in isopropyl alcohol with coarse salt, rinse with warm water, and let it dry all the way before you pack again.

A quick word on legal use
Spoon pipes are for legal cannabis only. Follow your state age rules and possession limits, and keep your pipe out of reach of children and pets. Smoke of any kind can irritate your lungs, so pace yourself and pay attention to how your chest feels.
