Short answer

THCA diamonds are crystalline THCA. THCA is not psychoactive until heat converts it to THC. To smoke a diamond, apply heat: a dab rig with a quartz banger at 450-550°F, or a small shard on top of a flower bowl. A whole diamond in a joint does not work.

What THCA diamonds are

Diamonds are THCA isolate. Purity runs 95-99% THCA. They form as clear or white crystals inside a high-terpene sauce. Retail jars often sell the two together as diamonds and sauce. The sauce carries flavor. The diamond carries the THCA.

Why heat is required

THCA has a carboxyl group. Heat removes it as carbon dioxide. The result is THC. This is decarboxylation. At room temperature the reaction takes months. At dab temperature it takes seconds. A diamond that stays below about 220°F remains mostly THCA and produces little effect.

Method 1: dab rig

  1. Heat a quartz banger with a torch for 20 to 30 seconds.
  2. Let the banger cool for 30 to 45 seconds.
  3. Check the temperature with an infrared thermometer. Target 450-550°F.
  4. Pick a shard of 0.02 to 0.1 g with a metal dab tool. Do not touch it with fingers.
  5. Drop the shard into the banger. Place a carb cap on top. Inhale.
  6. Swab the banger with a dry cotton swab after each dab.

Low temperature gives more flavor and less vapor. High temperature gives more vapor and a harsher hit. Above 600°F the terpenes degrade and the vapor tastes scorched.

Method 2: bowl topper

Break off a piece the size of a grain of rice. Place it on ground flower. Light the flower at the edge, not the crystal. Draw the flame into the bowl. The diamond melts into the flower. Expect some waste and an uneven burn. This method is less efficient than a rig.

Method 3: concentrate vaporizer

Use a device rated for concentrates. Set 450-550°F. Load 0.02 to 0.05 g. A diamond alone may not vape with consistency in a flower vaporizer. Use a concentrate pad or a dedicated chamber.

Do not

  • Do not put a whole diamond in a joint. It will not burn and it clogs the paper.
  • Do not touch diamonds with bare fingers. Skin oil coats the crystal.
  • Do not use a soft flame lighter on the crystal itself. Soot builds on the shard.

Dose

0.05 g of 99% THCA equals about 50 mg THCA. That converts to about 44 mg THC. This is a high dose for most users. Start with 0.02 to 0.03 g. Wait 15 minutes before a second dab.

Storage

Keep diamonds in a glass jar with a tight lid. Store at room temperature, away from light. THCA is stable, but conversion to THC continues over months. Sauce can separate from the crystal. Stir before use.
