THCP vs THC-O Psychoactive Strength
Pick THCP for measured receptor strength. Pick THC-O for effects that track close to THC. The two differ in mechanism, in lab numbers, and in risk profile.
New Strongest Cannabinoid Discovery
THCP
Researchers at the University of Naples Federico II identified THCP in 2019. The team measured binding at the CB1 receptor. THCP Ki: 1.2 nM. THC Ki: 40 nM. That is a 33-fold gap in binding affinity.
Binding affinity is a lab number. It does not equal human potency. No human clinical trial on THCP has been published. Hemp-market products list THCP at 0.5% to 5% of total cannabinoid content.
THC-O
THC-O acetate is THC with an acetyl group attached. The body can strip that group and leave THC. That makes THC-O a prodrug in theory. Direct human pharmacokinetic data is thin.
most potent cannabinoid for pain relief
Heat is the main safety question. Lab work shows ketene, a lung irritant, can form when THC-O acetate is vaporized at high temperature. Ketene formation depends on device temperature and coil design.
Side by side
- CB1 binding: THCP is stronger than THC. THC-O has no comparable published Ki figure.
- Mechanism: THCP binds receptors direct. THC-O may convert to THC first.
- Onset, inhaled: THC-O reports list 10 to 20 minutes. THCP reports list a slower climb.
- Duration: THCP reports list 4 to 8 hours. THC-O reports list 2 to 4 hours.
- Human trials: none published for either compound.
Label reading
A 1% THCP cartridge and a 1% THC-O cartridge do not act the same. Potency claims on packaging come from the seller, not from clinical work. Ask for a batch COA. Check cannabinoid content, residual solvents, and heavy metals.
Legal status
Both compounds sit under hemp-derived law at the federal level. State rules differ. Some states ban THC-O by name. Check your state list before you order.
Options
- THCP cartridges, 0.5% to 2%
- THC-O cartridges, 0.5% to 3%
- THCP and THC-O blends
- Edibles with a COA per batch
Start at the low end. Wait two hours before a second dose.
