How to Unclog a Weed Cart
Most clogs clear with two things: gentle warmth and a low-voltage preheat. Cannabis oil thickens as it cools, and that thicker oil plugs the airway or the mouthpiece. Warm the cart for a minute or two, run a preheat cycle on the lowest setting, then draw with light suction. If the cart leaks, tastes burnt, or stays blocked after two attempts, stop and replace it.

Why Carts Clog
Cartridge oil is a thick blend of cannabinoids, terpenes, and a thinning agent. When the cart sits in a cool room or a cold car, the oil thickens and a plug forms at the mouthpiece or the intake holes.
Other common causes: drawing too hard pulls oil up into the airway, storing the cart on its side lets oil pool at the top, and a weak battery produces thin vapor that leaves residue behind.
Before You Start
- A charged 510-thread battery with a preheat or low-voltage setting
- A dry paper towel or cotton swab
- Warm water or your hands for gentle heat
- A flat surface where the cart can stand upright
Steps to Clear a Clogged Cart
- Unscrew the cart from the battery and set it upright on a flat surface.
- Wipe the outside of the mouthpiece with a dry paper towel. Do not push anything into the opening.
- Screw the cart back on and set the battery to its lowest voltage, usually 2.0 to 2.8 volts.
- Press the preheat button for one cycle of no more than 5 seconds, then wait 30 seconds.
- Take a slow draw with light suction for 4 to 5 seconds. Stop if you taste burnt oil or feel harsh heat.
- If the draw is still blocked, hold the cart in your hands for 1 to 2 minutes, or set it near a mug of warm water that is not boiling.
- Repeat one more low-voltage preheat and one more slow draw.
- Stand the cart upright for 10 minutes so loosened oil can settle back down.
- If the cart is still blocked after the second try, stop and replace it.
What Not to Do
- Do not hold a lighter or torch to the glass. The glass can crack and the oil can scorch.
- Do not microwave or bake the cart.
- Do not poke the airway with a wire, pin, or paperclip. Metal can damage the coil or break the glass.
- Do not blow into the mouthpiece. That pushes oil deeper into the airway.
- Do not raise the voltage to burn out the clog.
High heat degrades terpenes and can irritate your throat. The CDC advises against modifying or tampering with vaping devices and cartridges, and against buying cannabis vape products from informal sources.

How to Prevent Clogs
- Store carts upright in a cool, dark place.
- Keep the silicone caps on carts you are not using.
- Draw with light suction instead of pulling hard.
- Keep the battery charged above the low-battery cutoff.
- Avoid leaving carts in a hot car or in direct sun.
- Run a short preheat draw after the cart has sat unused for a day or more.
When to Replace the Cart
Replace the cart when the oil tastes burnt, when the oil near the intake holes turns dark and gritty, when you see leaking at the base, or when the glass is cracked. A clog that returns within a few draws usually means the hardware is spent. If the cart came from a licensed dispensary and failed early, keep the packaging and ask the shop about a return.
