Compare unit price before the discount
A percent off applies to a menu price, not to a market price. Two shops can list a 3.5 g jar at $30 and $45 on the same day. A 30% banner on the $45 jar returns $31.50. The $30 jar with no banner costs less. Divide the price by grams. For vapes and concentrates, divide by milligrams of THC. Use one number: dollars per 10 mg of THC.

Example: 3.5 g of flower at 20% THC holds about 700 mg of THC. At $35, that is $0.50 per 10 mg. A 1 g cartridge at 85% THC holds about 850 mg. At $45, that is $0.53 per 10 mg. Run the math on the sale price and on the full price.
Check the package date first
Flower loses moisture and terpenes with time. A jar packed within 90 days holds more of both than a jar packed a year ago. Discounted flower tends to sit at the back of the shelf. Ask for the package date and the batch number printed on the label. If staff cannot find the date, treat that as a data point about the store.
Read the label, not the strain name
State rules require testing and labels on cannabis sold at retail. California labels carry cannabinoid content, a batch ID, and a required warning. Check THC and CBD numbers, the lab name, and the test date. Terpene content appears on some labels and on some lab reports. A strain name carries no legal definition, so the numbers are the part you can verify.
Ask what the listed price includes
Excise tax, sales tax, and local tax differ by state and city. California applies a state excise tax to retail cannabis on top of sales tax. The rate sat at 15% in 2025, and legislation can change it, so confirm the figure at the register. Some menus post tax-included prices and some do not. Ask for the total before you commit. Delivery fees, bag fees, and card fees can erase a 10% discount.

- Package date and batch number
- THC and CBD percentages from the label

Pitfalls
- Percent-off banners on a raised base price

- Discounts that apply to one tier of the menu
- Schedules that repeat, so a missed deal returns in seven days
