What a nug is

A nug is one dried flower bud from a female cannabis plant. The word is short for nugget. Dispensaries list this material as flower. It is the plant part that holds most of the cannabinoids and terpenes.

The Ultimate Buying Guide to Nugs

Where the term comes from

Cannabis flowers grow in clusters at nodes along the stem. Growers cut the clusters, trim the sugar leaves, then dry and cure them. Each cluster is a bud. Buyers shortened nugget to nug in the 1970s and 1980s. The term spread through print magazines and, later, forums.

Nugs Meaning Slang in Cannabis Culture

What a nug contains

Glandular trichomes cover the bud surface. These resin glands make THC, CBD, and terpenes. A bud with heavy trichome coverage looks frosted or sticky. THC content in tested flower sold at US dispensaries runs from about 15% to 30%. Values vary by cultivar, grow conditions, and harvest timing.

Nugs compared to other flower products

  • Shake: loose pieces and leaf fragments that fall off during handling. Fewer trichomes per gram.
  • Trim: sugar leaves and small leaf material cut during processing. Sold for extraction or at low price.
  • Smalls: whole buds below the size cutoff, often 1 gram or less each. Same plant, lower price.
  • Popcorn: small, dense buds from lower branches.

Weights and labels

US dispensaries sell flower by weight. Common units: 1 gram, 2 grams, an eighth (3.5 g), a quarter (7 g), a half ounce (14 g), and an ounce (28 g). Packages list weight, harvest date, THC percentage, and a batch or lot number. Some states require a license number on the label.

How to Buy Nugs Online: A Legal Cannabis Buying Guide

What to check before buying

Press the jar or bag through the packaging. A fresh nug holds shape and gives under pressure. A dry nug crumbles and has lost terpenes. Moisture above about 12% can support mold. Look for white or amber trichomes, even green or purple color, and no gray fuzz. Gray or white powdery patches can be mold or powdery mildew. Do not buy that package.

Storing a nug

Keep flower in an airtight glass jar away from light and heat. Room temperature works. Add a humidity pack to hold moisture near 58% to 62%. Grind only what you plan to use in one session. Ground flower loses terpenes faster than a whole bud.
